"Mirrors"
Works by Maria Makarov
January 4-25, 2026
Sala Martino V Inferiore – Castello Colonna
Piazza San Nicola, 1 – Genazzano (RM)
Many of the works on display from 2017 and 2018 date back to her Padua period, during which Makarov's painting took on a different light, leading her to lighten her palette but also to shift her work toward a more intimate and self-reflective dimension.
Painting becomes a kind of interior mirror for the artist, a dimension reinforced by her choice of portraiture, often expressed in self-portraiture, conceived as a way to be reborn into the world through pictorial action. A set designer as well as a painter, Maria Makarov is also an educator and art therapist. A student of the renowned artist and art therapist Edith Kramer, Makarov often holds workshops in hospitals and retirement homes, places where art offers a genuine opportunity to breathe.
One of these projects includes a series of small watercolour portraits, among Makarov's most popular techniques, along with oil. In these portraits, which feature the faces and names of some Alzheimer's patients, the possibility of recognizing oneself and returning to oneself through the path of Beauty is revealed.
